We drove to the Carvers Gap Trail in Cherokee National Forest. Carvers Gap is part of the Appalachian Trail and is right on the border of North Carolina and Tennesse. We crossed back and forth between the two states as we hiked:
This was a short hike up to one of the balds. It went through a very nice and fragrant forest. This was especially nice because I was in the middle of reading Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness by Dr Qing Li. In it he discussed the benefits of being in the forest. I could really smell the terpenes and was intent on listening to the sounds.
However, once we came out of the forest and onto the "balds" the wind began to be very fierce. My mother couldn't even stand up. It was in fact quite brutal. We went a little ways and from there headed back down.
The weather was pretty cold - in the 30s (F) I would say. However, the wind made it feel even colder!
